PostHeaderIcon Criteria For Official Burning Man Regional Events

To use the words 'Decompression', 'Burning Man', or 'Black Rock City' to promote an event one must request permission from Burning Man and be granted permission in writing.

Decision on permissibility of "Official" status is based on meeting the following criteria:

- A regional contact for your area must be involved to oversee and ensure the event adheres to all guidelines, requirements and Burning Man principles.
- The gathering should involve and benefit the entire community, rather than just one or two theme camps/entities. Everyone should be welcome to participate in creating the event and expressing themselves at it. The event should be open to all!
- It should adhere to the 10 Principles
- Properly permitted (occupancy, fire, sound, etc) and in accordance with local laws
- Properly insured

- Have safety/medical, security and appropriate fire safety plans.
- Your gathering should seek to provide a forum for artistic expression of the widest range possible. Not simply music, for example, but all kinds of creative expression. We also encourage including first time artists and performers who may be seeking a forum for their expression.
- If charging admission: all accounting must be transparent (i.e., reported to the community with results either being tracked real time on-line or posted publicly within 30 days of the event) and in accordance with local and national tax laws.
- If the event is profitable, any funds raised should:

  1. Benefit the entire local community
  2. Create a "community fund" so individuals don't have to take personal financial risks
  3. Create a LLC or non-profit to serve regional needs
  4. Fund artist grants
  5. Fund a community resource/project of some kind that the local Burning Man community agrees on in advance
  6. Make a donation to the Black Rock Arts Foundation and/or Burners Without Borders and/or the Burning Man Regional Network, as you are able.

If your event can afford it, we ask that you pay travel expenses for Burning Man staff you request to attend your event. Though not required this allows us to help other regions that cannot afford to pay for such expenses when needing in-person help.
