GVIAS is offering art grants for the production and operation of sound stages at Burn in the Forest. Once granted, successful applicants will be eligible for directed tickets. These stages will be required to operate according to the sound policy for the entire event.
Grant applications for Sound Stages for Burn in the Forest 2019 close on April 12th, 2019 at 11:59 pm.
What Will a GVIAS Grant Cover?
- Sound Stage Art Grants may include any reasonable expenses required to operate a sound stage, including:
- Gear rental
- Transportation expenses
- Consumables and materials for the construction of physical elements
- Expert labour (if required).
- Sound Stage Art Grants will not cover the purchase of large gear (speakers, lighting, etc.)
- Sound Stage Art Grants will not cover purchase of alcohol, food, or tickets to the event
- Sound Stage Art Grants will not cover labour for the producers, stage managers, musicians, artists, DJs, or general labour. Only labour which MUST be outsourced and paid for will be considered.
Who is Eligible?
Any individual producer, team of producers or established group may apply. For teams and groups, please have only one person submit an application for the group. The producer(s) must attend BITF and must deliver the stage if selected, or the grant is void and any advance money paid by GVIAS will be recouped. Applicants must be a member of Greater Vancouver Interactive Art’s Society. Membership is free and can be obtained by applying through the GVIAS website here.
Grant Qualification Criteria
Projects will be considered according to the following criteria:
- Artistic Excellence: How “Wow!” is the idea?
- Hours of Operation: Will the programming make full use of the allowed days and times?
- Radical Inclusion: What is the plan for deciding the line-up? Will there be diversification in the type/style of music played? How will you engage the local Burning Man community in development of the stage?
- Stage Design: What will your stage look like?
- Adherence to Sound Policy: How do you plan on adhering to the sound policy? How do you plan on ensuring the quiet enjoyment of neighbours while also ensuring the stage is bumpin’?
- Viability of Delivery Plan: Is your budget, schedule, build plan, crew size, and assembly/teardown plan sensible? Can you deliver the project you’re proposing in the budget and timeframe stated?
- History of Project Delivery: Do you and/or your team have experience delivering similar installations successfully, without causing a bunch of headaches for the event?
- Value for Money: Is your project a “How did you get that all done for that little???” or a “We’re paying how much for this???”
- Budget Clarity: Is your budget clear and well thought out? Does it contain sufficient detail to evaluate the project? Or does it inflate the costs of the project in order to increase the % grant coverage?
- Leave No Trace: Do you have a plan for leaving no trace?
How Will Grants Be Paid?
Successful applicants will be asked to sign a contract in order to receive their grant. 75% of the grant amount will be paid upon signing the contract. The final 25% will be paid upon completion of the project, viewing of the project by a committee member and submission of a final cost report and signed contract with copies of all receipts. Please be sure to read the contract fully.
Failure to execute your proposed project may result in ineligibility for future grants.
Other Terms and Conditions:
The Event is responsible for all aspects of the stages delivered within it, so the producer(s) are required to coordinate with the event, particularly with regards to noise. If you are asked to “turn it down (or off)” by Event Officials, do so. Cooperate with BitF staff and the Grants Committee in the delivery of the stage and performances.
The Event will provide a coordinator(s) to assist with details for sound requirements, power needs, transportation, etc. The event may be able to provide power and transportation, or some portion of these, but this is not guaranteed and radical self-reliance is always best!
